Dawn – to become day

I was half asleep when I took this image at 6:10 a.m. I forgot I took it until I checked my photo library for something else. It got me wondering, how much of my life do I go through semi-conscious? It’s all too easy to get into a routine and forget to pay attention.

Travel helps me stay present and aware because I’m out of my comfort zone in a new place. The air smells different, sounds are out of the ordinary, food tastes strange. It’s even more disorienting when surrounded by a foreign language. I love it! I feel more alive.

Age 3, Rome

I started traveling at a young age. My dad was transferred to Karachi, Pakistan when he was in the Air Force. This photo was taken on our trip there. Living in such an exotic place at as a small child had a profound affect. Wanderlust is part of me.

Another integral part of me is curiosity. I also have wonderlust. I love to read. I’m always learning something new, exploring new ways of being.

I enjoyed Michelle Obama’s book, Becoming. We change all the time but are we consciously becoming who we are? She’s entered a new phase of life, post-First Lady. She’s the most admired woman in the U.S. right now but won’t be resting on her laurels. I can’t wait to see what she decides to do next now that her book tour has ended.

I don’t aspire to fill stadiums when I speak. I do aspire to become more skillful in expressing words, thoughts and ideas. My writing coach is encouraging me to write short essays so that’s what I’m doing.

I turned 66 in April. I feel different than I did at 61. I wonder more about how much future I have, how much future we all have, whether or not the planet will survive. I also feel a stronger sense of ME, who I am, and less fear about saying what I truly think.

I’m becoming a Hedge Writer. A hedge is a boundary. I expect to be crossing boundaries as a woman in love with nature, feeling wilder by the year, more connected to Earth than ever.

Oh, SO much goodness contained within here, Loran. I love the ties in to travel, wanderlust, and wonderlust. And most of all, your tie ins to nature and self, and aging on a planet that’s full of both. LOVE the term Hedge Writer. I hadn’t heard that one before, and it’s perfect for you. Keep writing toward and outside those boundaries. xox
